I often say, we live in a very entitled generation, but I’m actually really shocked at how many don’t realise they are actually entitled to this !
CHILD BENEFIT is £20.70 for your oldest child 0-16 years (up to 20 if staying in education), and £13.70 for Each Subsequent child, thats right, it is not capped at 2, like most benefits are now.
I gave birth to my 4th child In June 2018 and was told at the hospital (by the Bounty lady) I wouldn’t get anything, so I never filled in the forms 🙈
£13.70 doesn’t really go far these days and would have been spent on nappies or such anyway so I never gave it another thought…..
Epic faux pas I didn’t check…
Turns out I was entitled, the cap does not affect Child Benefit. Even if it did, I should still have applied, so that I recieved National Insurance credits towards my state pension.
Applying for child benefit, even if you chose not to take the payment, is how the child is registered in the system to recieve their own National Insurance number at 16.
So its definitely worth doing even if you or your partner earn over the £50k threshold.
You can claim Child Benefit as soon as you’ve registered the birth of your child, or they come to live with you.
It can take up to 12 weeks to process a new Child Benefit claim (or longer if you’re new to the UK). Child Benefit can be backdated for up to 3 months.
I wasn’t the only one that made this mistake, I’ve spoken to 5 friends who thought the same!
So this got me thinking about who else isn’t getting this that they’re entitled to?
For many families, getting a 4 week payment of £54.80 would be most welcomed.
